ஒரு நாள் துயிலெழுகிறார், அவர் மனைவி திவ்யா தமிழில் “Honey, its been 4 years, since we had fallen in love” என்று சொல்ல “மேஜர்” சூர்யா சூட்சுமமாக புன்னகைத்துகொண்டே பல் விளக்குகிறார். அவர் பல் விளக்கி துப்பும் நுரையினையும், பிரஷை கழுவுவதையும் க்ளோசப் ஷாட் ஒன்றில் காட்டுகிறார்கள் (ஏனென்று கேட்காதீர்கள், Batman போல இமாலயம் சென்று தில்லி திரும்பிய சூர்யா, பப்லூ குழுவுடன் சண்டை போடும் போது ஒருவருடைய மணிக்கட்டை தக்காளி நறுக்குவதுபோல நறுக்கும் honest, bottom of the heart காட்சியில், துண்டாகும் கையை காட்டுகிறார்கள். அது ஏன் என்று முதலில் கேளுங்க)

தமிழ் வாழ்வைப் பேசுவதை பொறுத்தமட்டில் ‘miles to go!’

படத்தின் தரம் பற்றி ஏதும் சொல்லப் போவதில்லை. பார்வையாளர்கள் பாதியிலேயே தங்கள் சொந்தக் கதை பேச ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்கள், முடியுமுன் வெளியேறி விட்டார்கள் என்பவற்றைத் தவிர. இவர்களை “ரசனை கெட்ட மோசமான பார்வையாளர்கள்” என்று என் நண்பர்கள் சிலர் வர்ணித்தனர். பாதியில் நின்று போன ஒரு படத்தை பார்க்கும் பொறுமையற்ற, ஆங்கிலம் சரியாய் புரியாத இந்த பார்வையாளர்கள் சார்பில் நான் மன்னிப்புக் கேட்கிறேன்!

படத்தில் ‘ I love you’ சொல்வதில்லை. ‘I am in love with you’ சொல்கிறார்கள்

Even though Gautham Menon has made a reflective movie, he fails to give us concrete scenes. Mani Ratnam had succeeded in this brilliantly through Alaipayuthe.

We are never given any details of Krishnan’s work life and why he is such a hero to his son. His pursuit of Malini ends with that beautiful song “Mundhinam Paarthene” and all that is left of their relationship is scattered dialogues of he calling her darling and Malini exclaiming they are mad over each other even after so many years of marriage.

I strongly felt Gautham could have built the Krishnan-Malini relationship as a parallel to Surya’s own love life, the way Mira Nair beautifully nurtured Ashoke and Ashima’s life along with Gogol’s life in the sensitive The Namesake.

உயிரே இல்லாத பல காட்சிகள் சரியான போகன் வில்லா

வெளிநாட்டுக்கு படிக்க போவதாக சமீரா சொல்லும் போது சூர்யா அடிக்கிற கமெண்ட்டில் தியேட்டர் அதிருகிறது.

‘சேவலு’க்கு பிறகு இதிலும் கண்ணுக்கு கீழே கறுப்பு மை! கொடுத்த வேலையை பொறுப்பாக பாந்தமாக செய்கிறார். நடிப்பில் அத்தனை நுணுக்கம். கடைசி காட்சியில் சூர்யா ‘எடுத்துடலாமா’ என்று கேட்கும் போது, சிம்ரனின் ரியாக்ஷன் டாப் க்ளாஸ்!

யார் யாரையோ சூர்யா காப்பாற்றுகிறார். நம்மை காப்பாற்றத்தான் ஆளில்லை.

Goutham could have used all of Suriya’s efforts with a better narration

One can understand the director’s angst at losing a parent, and trying to make a film about the loss, but then the man’s (father) enigma never takes center stage throughout the film.

Probably the biggest drawback of the film. The narration of the film has been designed to follow a ‘classic approach’. Unfortunately, all the ingredients that go into the making of a classic are missing thereby making the screenplay stagnate at times to irritable proportions.

All films that have been successful in being called classics portray enduring human emotions that can be related with instantaneously. Goutham has most definitely missed the plot with ‘Varanam Aayiram’ giving more emphasis to incidents rather than connecting them well.

The ‘daddy’ issue. This is the first time that i’ve seen the hero of the film address his father as ‘daddy’ throughout a tamil movie. It is not sappy and it is not over glorified. It simply shows the child within the son’s heart who still thinks of his father the same way he did when he was a kid.

I had listened to the songs more than 1000 times had a little too much of expectations which the movie failed to fulfill. Harris Jeyaraj is amazing in his composition and has tried different synchs(like anjalaey song) and back ground score is out of this world. Music and picturusation works wonders for this movie and is a huge plus.

Ensure that no one else spends their hard earned money on watching ‘Varanam Aayiram’

7. Simran – I couldn’t digest this…Simran in my dreams is still dancing to ‘Aal Thota Bhoopathi’ but seems like she has jumped on to the track taken by Revathy…Inflation, credit crunch is forcing even celebrities to take such drastic measures

8. This is a good material for Soap serial and I wouldn’t have had any qualms watching it in Sun TV. It has all the basic elements 2 Love Stories (with Sameera and Divya), 2 siblings (we could have taken 200 episodes each on them and how they grow), loan (there was a mention of it…see I wasn’t sleeping) repay story…I think probably Gautam Menon is contemplating a new soap serial in Sun taking on Bharathiraja’s in Kalaingar

The best part in the movie for me was the train romance scene and the last scene where the father comes to his room and sends him off. He has a small droplet of tear in his eyes and he says, I will be thinking about you, man was so touching. Totally, in contrast to how he advised Surya that he was no more a kid but a grown up, and Surya would be totally in tears on his first day in college. May be its true that you become a kid again when you grow old.

The heroine who proposes without a hint of a blush, the travel song, the death of the heroine, the hairstyle of the bad guy, the short sentences (this time non-crispy) and the camera angles used to capture the heroine’s beauty … All standard Gautam Menon style. But this time it fails to create the response it usually does.

I liked the picturisation & Surya’s dance in the song “Anjala”

This is his Autograph albeit for a niche audience. Little details in the movie are so personal, like the father Surya calling his son Kiddo, or referring to himself as Dadda or just Simran and Krishna (the father) lying down next to Surya and holding him down. Its something we see everyday around us but so rarely on screen.

நிறைய ஸ்வீட் நத்திங்ஸ் படத்தில். அதனாலேயே படம் முழுவதும் பார்க்க முடிகிறது. காஷ்மீர்ல எடுத்த சில காட்சிகள் இருட்டில் சரியாகத்தெரியாமல் போகிறது. எம்டன் மகனில் வர்ற மாதிரி கண்டிப்பான அப்பா அல்லது தவமாய் தவமிருந்துல வர்ற மாதிரி தியாகி அப்பா இவங்களை மட்டுமே பிடிச்ச ஆளுங்க இந்தப்படத்தை பாத்திராதீங்க. உங்க அப்பா நண்பனா , ரோல் மாடலா இருந்திருந்தா அல்லது இருக்கணும்னு விருப்படும் ஆளா இருந்தா போய் பாருங்க.

Gautham’s characteristic narrative pinch and an eye for realism, be it through close-ups or witty dialogs or jazzed up background score. Lots of well-executed montages here.

the dirty dark suburbs of Delhi(after Dil Se, I feel this film captured it so well, a style now conveniently termed Anurag Kashyap style-gritty, dark, harsh suburban reality of an otherwise picture perfect and prosperous city), Srinagar(beautiful use of filters, ambient light, much like Yahaan)
